Web Based

If you have Chromebooks or computers in your classroom then this is the page for you! Below you will find ideas for how to use them in your classroom in literacy centers.

Web Video Tasks:

Assign a video for the kids to watch and give them a task to complete. Videos are available on the PBS media website as well as YouTube (YouTube however may be blocked). Provide the kids with easy access to the video link(s). You could create a bookmark or post the link to your blog. My favorite videos to use are from Between the Lions and The Electric Company. You could also create your own videos.

Examples:

Directions Watch the full video below. Re-watch the video, this time pausing and recording the prepositions and prepositional phrases you find on each page.

Google Docs:

Another option for literacy centers in your classroom is having kids utilize google docs. Once students know how to login to their own personal Google accounts they can create docs and share them with you. They can then be printed or shared. Google Docs pairs nicely with Working on Writing. It allows students time to type a new story or one they have already written.

Students can also create a doc and share it with a friend. They can then type a conversation through typing back and forth. This will encourage them to learn how to use and share docs, introduce them to collaboration, and work on spelling and typing.

Web Games:

Below are some websites that my students use when on a Chromebook during their Daily 5 literacy centers. My all time favorite is Teach Your Monster to Read. Each student gets their own login and it is perfect for the beginning of 1st grade.

    Research and Note Taking:

    • Allow students time to research for a writing assignment or science/social studies lesson.
    • Give students a G.O. to fill out as they research.

    Website/Video Organization:

When using websites and web links with my littles I try to make sure they have easy access to the sites that they will need. This decreases their start time and increased their productivity. I use a sqworl page to organize the websites for my students but I have heard great things about the other sites as well. Our sqworl page is bookmarked on all Chrombooks.

Chromebook Tip: When using Google Chrome you can create a generic email for use on all devices. You can then create a bookmark of your links so they are easy for students to find. When you update your bookmarks on one, it will change it for all books that use that email. As the year progresses I have my kids use their own login and make their own bookmark.

    Differentiation Links:

This past year on my classroom blog I made a page for each student and added links to specific web games I wanted them to play. The sites I chose were based on each students individual needs. You could also use one of the organization pages from above.
